Board: Sabattus Selectmen

Met: Tuesday night

Snow Fest

Issue: After a brief public hearing, selectmen approved a mass gathering permit for the Sabattus Mountaineers’ Sabattus Snow Fest on Sabattus Pond. (The event has been known as radar runs in the past.)

The scoop: The board waived the $250 permit fee for the nonprofit.

Up next: More than 250 people are expected Feb. 12 and 13.

New: Pay options

Issue: Residents who use town water and sewer currently pay their bills at the Sabattus Sanitary District.

The scoop: Soon, there will be another option. Users can either pay their quarterly charges at the town office or at the sanitary office. In exchange, the sanitary office will pay the town office $1 per payment, up to $5,000 for the year.

Up next: The change goes live March 1.

Bring on the salt

Issue: The town has heard some complaints that road conditions aren’t what they used to be in the wintertime.

The scoop: Town Manager Rick Bates said Public Works budgeted for 550 tons of salt this winter compared to 800 tons in the past.

Up next: Selectmen agreed with Bates’ recommendation to be more generous with the salt and sand, even if that brings Public Works over budget. To save time, however, downtown snowbanks will continue to be removed only after they’ve grown high enough to get in the way, visually. They used to be removed after every storm.

Budget happenings

Issue: The Budget Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the town office to start that process. They’ll meet every Thursday for the month. The public is welcome.
