FARMINGTON — SugarWood Gallery will have as Artists of the Month Stan Keirstead of Farmington and his art class. An open house to introduce their work will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 4.

The public is invited to meet Keirstead and many of his students, who will be present to discuss their work. Refreshments will be served.

Students showing will be Barbara Koppel, Avis Brown, Pat Walker, Mary Ann Whitman, Ray Bryant, Sergio Woods, Donna Assmussin, Paula Enman, Susan Holmes, Laura Neil, Mary Karasko, Megan Roberts, Sharon Provost, Joanne Smith, Peter Dumont, Kay Seefeldt, Joyce Stinchfield, Vickie Noel, Eilene McGuire, Suzanne DeStefano, Rebecca Shinas, Fred Smith, Becky Close, Marilyn Rogers and Dick Harvey.

Keirstead is a native of Greenville, graduated from Farmington State Teachers College and served in the Army in Europe in 1955 -57. It was that exposure to fine art that began his interest in painting and carving.

Upon his discharge, Keirstead taught in the Jay and Livermore Falls school systems before moving to Mt. Blue High School to teach history. He was appointed principal for a 60-day term upon the sudden departure of the then principal. Eighteen years later, in 1983, Keirstead retired as principal.

His painting hobby began in oil, but after expressing his frustration to fellow teacher and artist, Dave Burnell, he was invited to visit Burnell’s studio and observe his techniques. That visit changed Keirstead’s direction.

He has combined his love of education with his favorite hobby and conducts regular watercolor classes at his home studio in Farmington.

SugarWood Gallery is  located at 248 Broadway Road. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
