JAY — Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to award a contract to repair a portion of the roof on Fire Station 2 at the southern end of the town to Chretien’s Construction of Livermore.
The award is contingent on the company stripping shingles from one side of the roof on one of two buildings, providing proof of insurance and calling the public safety director when it is stripped.
Firefighters want to inspect the wood on the section to determine how much, if any, is rotten and needs to be replaced.
The roof is leaking on the section that will be replaced.
Chretien’s bid was for $2,780, and to inspect plywood for rot and replace as needed added $45 per sheet.
The second lowest bid was from Greg Roy Builders of Jay. It was $3,650, plus to repair rot it cost $28 per hour plus material.
Selectmen said they believed a third bidder, Frazier Construction of Jay, misread the bid specifications. That total to strip three different roof sections, replace any rotten wood and put the metal roofing on was $26,959.27.
A fourth bid from Hutchinson Builders of Jay was not opened because it arrived on Monday morning and the deadline was Friday afternoon, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said.
