AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker is proposing that a process be created for Maine citizens to recall the governor, legislators and constitutional officers.

Rep. Cynthia Dill’s proposal was set aside without action Thursday in the Maine House.

Dill, of Cape Elizabeth, says the proposal is in response to hundreds of citizen requests and it is not specifically aimed at Republican Gov. Paul LePage or any other elected official.

While the Maine Constitution has provisions for impeachment, Dill says it doesn’t set out a process for citizens to initiate elected state officials’ removal from office. Dill says 18 other states have a recall process.

Dill’s order surfaces amid a furor over LePage’s order to remove a mural depicting labor history from a state office.
