PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — An April Fools’ snowstorm is no joke in parts of New England that are getting socked by heavy snow. Elsewhere in the Northeast, it has turned out to be more wet than white.
The National Weather Service says the storm veered farther eastward than some models predicted, bringing the potential of a foot of snow to parts of northern New England on Friday. Other parts of the Northeast were seeing either rain or lesser amounts of snow.
In Maine, heavy wet snow was clinging to road signs and trees. Falling tree limbs knocked out electricity for more than 30,000 homes and businesses in Maine and New Hampshire.
Across the region, thousands of children were getting a spring snow day. The record for an April 1 snowstorm in Portland, Maine, is 11.1 inches.
