With the ice out at Taylor Pond there was a crowd there for the first of the season. Among the cottages opened Sunday were those of Charles Wheeler, H. E. Condon, Charles Greenleaf, Preston Carver, Miss Lillian Kendall, James Palmer and A. A. Wills. But few boats have been put in the pond and there has been little fishing done yet.

50 years ago, 1961

The Lewiston Police Athletic League begins a citywide PAL Booster membership drive today with a goal of 5,000 new members.

Patrolman Laurent E. Veilleux, a director of the PAL, is serving as chairman of the drive that will last throughout the month of May.

The PAL is beginning its 14th consecutive year. Activities include summer baseball, public skating, tennis, hockey and a winter carnival. PAL centers are on East Avenue, Farwell Street, Rideout Avenue, Summer Street and Lisbon Street.

25 years ago, 1986

LISBON — Selectmen Tuesday night granted a victualer’s license and a malt liquor license for a new billiard hall to be located in the former Dunton’s Department Store on Main Street in downtown Lisbon Falls.

After 45 minutes of debate from both supporters and opponents, Michael Mize was granted the licenses, with restrictions, to operate The Side Pocket. Mize described it as a family-type recreation center catering to young adults.
