If the local high schools ever expect to gain the support of the local public for their games, they must learn to begin them somewhere near the advertised time. The game at Garcelon Field yesterday afternoon between Lewiston High and Brunswick was advertised to begin at 3:15. As a matter of fact, it began at 4:10. If this had been an isolated case, it might be different but it is the usual thing.

50 years ago, 1961

State Rep. Frank J. Bussiere, declaring “city hall needs a cleaning up,” reported last night that he “definitely will run for mayor” in 1962. The former Ward Five alderman made the statement to a newsman following a meeting of the Finance Board.

“The city is in need of a good man,” Bussiere contended.

25 years ago, 1986

Residents in Androscoggin County towns whose only police protection is provided by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department in Auburn will be out of luck if they need immediate police assistance between midnight and 3 p.m. the next day.

Sheriff Ronald B. Gagnon announced this week that because of a shortage of deputies trained in rural patrol work and because of the Supreme Court’s Garcia mandate, restricting overtime compensation for public employees, he was forced to trim patrol schedules.

The new plan — to provide coverage only between 3 p.m. and midnight — was to take effect immediately, according to a department press release.
