Swept away
Issue: Elm, Main, High and Greene streets were all recently swept by Public Works, a job usually left to the state since they are state roads. Selectman Mark Duquette asked why the change.
The scoop: Town Manager Rick Bates said the roads were cleaned in advance of the town’s Memorial Day Parade. The state would have done it, but not by May 30.
Up next: The parade starts at 9 a.m. at the American Legion on Island Road before heading toward the memorial in the town square. Police, firefighters and local Boy and Girl Scouts will all participate.
New faces
Issue: Chris Morin, the town’s assistant fire chief, was appointed to the Planning Board. Ron Edgerley was appointed to the Board of Appeals.
The scoop: The Appeals Board is still looking for one more member.
Odds and ends
Issue: The selectmen meeting on June 7 has been canceled. Voting on the Regional School Unit 4 budget has been set for that day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Town Office. A public hearing with a description of what’s in the budget is set for June 1 at Oak Hill High School.
Issue: Land acquisition issues have slowed the downtown’s new sidewalk project, Bates said.
Issue: The annual Fire Department Open House is being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, with hamburgers and hot dogs. Fire Chief Don Therrien said it’s a chance to check out the trucks and ask questions about the department or the budget.
