MEXICO — The Mexico High School Class of 1948 will meet for their monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Gatch’s.
Historical society
DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Historical Society will hold its June meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the historical society museum. Butch Towle will be presenting the history of Towle’s Hardware through a slideshow as he and his family celebrate 100 years of doing business in Dixfield. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.
Bocce begins
RUMFORD — Bocce court preparation and games will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in back of the Sons of Italy Hall on Route 108.
Please bring equipment to cut, trim and put railroad ties in place. All community members are welcome to play.
Mini Relay
BETHEL — The Telstar Middle School advanced art class will present a mini Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, at the Telstar track and trails.
This event, which will include food, crafts, games and other entertainment, is in honor of Nancy B. Young, the longtime secretary of the Crescent Park Elementary School who passed away in Aug. 2010 after a six-year battle with cancer. Participants will be walking along the track and the recently completed “Path of Perseverance” trail, which was built by advanced art students to connect the Telstar trail system to Bailey Road.
All community members are invited to join the event participants on the track for the survivor’s lap at 4 p.m. and the luminaria ceremony at 8 p.m.. For more information, visit www.wix.com/tmspop/trails.
Dance show
RUMFORD — Expressive Movement Debbie’s Dance Studio will present their rendition of this year’s production, “WIZ,” at 6 p.m. Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11. The auditorium at Mountain Valley High School will come alive with the sounds of talented young singers and energetic dancers in this two-hour show.
Erin Milligan portrays Dorothy, Alyssa Greene plays the Scarecrow, Kirstin Ridge is the Tin Man and Noah Tanguay-Collins is the Cowardly Lion. The show ends with a performance by the alumni of Expressive Movement to “Smooth Criminal.”
Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are purchased at the door.
Registrations for the 2011-12 dance season will be open to the public on both evenings before and after the show. For more information, call Debbie at 364-6267.
Church services
RUMFORD — The Rumford United Methodist Church will have its church service at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 12. It will be a joint service with the Rumford Center United Methodist Church and the Bethel United Methodist Church. Because it is a celebration of Pentecost, which was the birth of the church, the sermon by Pastor Carol Stevens will be “Happy Birthday, Church.”
Following the church service there will be a fellowship dinner. The church service and the dinner are both open to the public and first-time worshipers are always welcome. FMI: Pastor Stevens, 364-8703.
Quilters meet
RUMFORD — Rumford Area Quilters will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, June 13, at the Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell Street, for the last meeting of the year. Note time change.
A special quilt show for members will be held and members may bring up to three quilted items to include in the show. Attach a tag to each item with your name and pattern name, if available. Ice cream sundaes will be enjoyed as well as show and tell. All area quilters welcome. For more information call 562-7050
Class of 1958
RUMFORD — Stephens High School Class of 1958 will hold the first monthly luncheon at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Brian’s Bistro. All classmates and significant others are welcome. If interested in attending, call Janet at 364-2928 by June 13.
Spaghetti supper
CANTON — Whitney Lodge # 167 of Canton will hold a public spaghetti supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Lodge Hall. Donations will be accepted.
Book sale
RUMFORD — The annual book sale at the Rumford Public Library will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25.
In addition to new-condition books that can be purchased for as little as $1, videos and audio books will also be available. On the following Monday customers may purchase an entire bag of books for $1. Children’s books, nonfiction and modern and classical fiction will be featured among the many choices. All sales benefit library programs.
Books will be sorted by category for ease of shopping. The event will take place downstairs in the public room, with some tables outside if weather permits. Anyone with books to contribute other than text books may simply drop them off during library hours.
Friends of the Rumford Library, part of Friends of Libraries USA, is the sponsoring group. New members and volunteers are always welcome.
