RUMFORD — Police on Tuesday issued a wanted poster for a convicted sex offender accused of failing to comply with Maine’s Sex Offender Registry.
They are seeking help from the public to find William Lee Wickham, 28, whose last known address on May 3 was Apartment 2 at 341 Cumberland St., in Rumford, Capt. Daniel Garbarini said late Tuesday afternoon.
“I spoke to his roommate and he said he doesn’t know where he is,” Garbarini said.
Wickham was convicted on March 9, 2005, of sexual abuse of a minor and was ordered to register as a convicted sex offender for 10 years.
The wanted poster identifies Wickham as being 6 feet tall, 165 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes, and a medium build.
Garbarini said police do not believe Wickham is a threat to public safety.
“I am not aware of any immediate dangers or concerns other than the registration requirements,” he said by email.
Police want to know where Wickham is and urge people with that information to contact Rumford police at 364-4551 or www.rumfordpd.com/welcome.html, local police or dial 911.
Garbarini said he applied for a felony arrest warrant and it was granted Tuesday.
According to the Sun Journal archives, in March 2005, Wickham, then of Lewiston, pleaded guilty to charges of giving alcohol to a young girl and sexually abusing her at his apartment in Mexico in 2004.
Wickham was sentenced to 60 days in Oxford County Jail in Paris and ordered to register for 10 years as a convicted sex offender.
Garbarini said that in 2007, Wickham was arrested on two misdemeanor charges of failing to comply for the first time.
“He pleaded guilty to the first one and the judge dismissed the second one,” Garbarini said.
In 2009, Wickham was arrested and charged again with failure to comply, only that second offense was a felony crime, he said.
The Portland native pleaded guilty to that charge and is now wanted by Rumford police on a third offense for failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registry, Garbarini said.
