DIXFIELD — Larry Bisbee’s Countryfolk Music Theatre on US Route 2 in East Dixfield opened its 12th season on May 29. Countryfolk is always free and for families and is now open every Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.

Bisbee, operator of the venue, said, “This year’s opening weekend was the best in the past 12 years with 23 musicians performing superb music and a large crowd was on hand.”

The theater’s mission is to encourage youth musicians with scholarship awards each year. They have awarded more than $4000 in scholarship money over the past 12 years to 27 individual youth musicians.

Youth musicians as well as seasoned musicians are invited to join each Sunday.

“We are also looking for instruments for youth who are in need,” said Bisbee. “We’re not a fancy place, but we are operated by volunteers and bring a sense of community through music to the area.”

Countryfolk Music Theatre offers country, bluegrass and gospel music each Sunday of the summer. There are two covered stages, an open-air spectator building with a dance floor and a common area between. Performances take place rain or shine. There is no charge to the public; donations are requested to support the scholarship project.

Countryfolk Youth Music Scholarship weekend is July 29-31. Friday night will be a small jam session; Saturday will feature scheduled music from noon to 7 p.m. (new musicians every half hour) and a country dance from 7-9 p.m. The event will continue Sunday will music all day from noon to 6 p.m., with special guest and scholarships from 1-2 p.m.
