LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on June 21 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners in Flight A were: 1st, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; 2nd, Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner; 3rd, Jeanine Kivus and Rosemarie Goodwin; 4th, Helen Little and Lucille Theriault.
Winners in Flight B were; 1st, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; 2nd, Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner. Winners in Flight C were Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe. A quarterly Club Championship Game will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, at the center.
The club also met on June 22 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Winners were: 1st, David Lock and Patricia Garcia; 2nd, Luke Merry and Paul Barber. A quarterly Club Championship Game will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, at Schooner Estates. A partner is guaranteed at all local games. Seeking artists
WINTHROP — Applications are now being accepted by the Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce for the 24th annual Winthrop Sidewalk Art Festival to be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in downtown Winthrop. Known as one of the best art festivals in Maine, the event features many high-quality artists and draws attendees from throughout the region. The art festival is complemented by many other activities held in Winthrop, including the library book sale, church bake sales and luncheons, and numerous specials at local merchants.
Applications are being accepted for this juried event from artists who work in a variety of media. The categories of media have been expanded to include fabric, leather, metal, wood and other categories.
Application forms are available for downloading on the Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce website, www.winthropchamber.org/documents/2011SidewalkFestivalApplication_000.pdf, and by sending an email to info@winthropchamber.org or calling 377-8020.
Declaration reading
NEW GLOUCESTER — The Declaration of Independence will be read aloud at the monthly New Gloucester History Barn open house at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2, on Route 231, behind the Town Hall. The complete History Barn open hours on that day are 9 a.m. to noon. The event is sponsored by the New Gloucester Historical Society.
Shaker workshops
NEW GLOUCESTER — Two workshops will be held Saturday, July 2, at at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26.
A floorcloth workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will make a 2-foot by 3-foot canvas floorcloth using traditional designs or designs of their own making. Betsy Grecoe, who sells her floorcloths at the Shaker Store, will be the instructor. Fee is $55, including all materials. Preregistration is required.
A hands-on herb cooking workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Harvesting and drying of herbs, herb blend recipes and prepared foods will be part of this workshop as well as attendees making their own herb blends. Fee is $40. Preregistration is required.
Market celebration
WAYNE — The Wayne Farmers Market will hold its annual Market Celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 2, with special children’s events, free drawings and music by Chris Cushman and Friends.
From 9:30 to 10:30, children’s events include face painting and flower and herb planting activities. Each child will be able to create and take home a flower and herb garden in a pot.
On the half hour, the Market Committee will give away coupons good for $5 worth of purchases from any vendor, and new Wayne Farmers’ Market canvas shopping bags. Names can be entered into the drawing at the Market table.
The market continues every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon until the end of September on the green next to the Post Office, with vendors selling vegetables, meat, dairy products, perennials, baked goods, blueberries, goats milk soap and eggs.
Pie sale
WAYNE — Friends of the Cary Memorial Library will hold a pie sale Saturday, July 2, from 8 a.m. until sold out, on the library lawn, Old Winthrop Road.
There will be homemade pies and pie coupons for later baking and delivery.
While in Wayne, also stop by the used book sale inside the library, the Pooh Bear yard sale across the street, the silent auction at the Community Church and the farmer’s market on Main Street.
Fourth cookout
LEWISTON — Hope Haven Gospel Mission will provide a Set Us Free Fourth of July celebration cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 4, at 209 Lincoln St. All who are in need are welcome. Shut-ins may call 783-6086 for delivery.
Berry pancakes
FREEPORT — St. Jude Church, on Main and School Streets, will hold a blueberry pancake and sausage breakfast on the Fourth of July from 7 to 10 a.m. Small orders are $4 and large orders are $5. Active duty personnel eat free. For more information, call 846-5584.
