For the first time since 1903, a ladies’ baseball team will invade the two cities Saturday, when the Bloomer Girls of Harrisburg, Pa., will be the attraction.
They will meet the strong Pilgrim team and from all accounts should be able to give the local boys a good game. They have been playing in different parts of the country for the past few years and have everywhere met with success.
50 years ago, 1961
The Auburn Police Department’s new cruiser cars went into operation yesterday as the old vehicles were retired from service.
Police Chief Alton E. Savage said one of the new Plymouth sedans will be on cruiser duty along with the Rambler Ambassador purchased recently by the department. These two vehicles will be the department’s “marked” vehicles. They are white with blue tops and both will have rotating blue emergency lights on top.
25 years ago, 1986
With the words “Our second telecommunications center is to be in the Peck building,” the president of L.L. Bean ended months of speculation and sent a wave of optimism through city officials and downtown businessmen on Friday.
Leon A. Gorman, grandson of the near legendary L. L. Bean who founded the nationally recognized outdoor and sporting goods giant in 1912, announced that the firm would use the top three floors of the Peck’s building to eventually house 150 permanent and up to 450 temporary employees to handle catalog orders.
