AUBURN — Three agencies are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who was found hanged in his cell at the Androscoggin County Jail on Wednesday night.
Kyle Farrell, listed as a transient in the jail log, was alone in his maximum-security cell at the time, Sheriff Guy Desjardins said.
He had been arrested July 25 on three charges by Auburn police, two for robbery, one for refusing to submit to arrest, near the Riverwalk path.
Farrell had not made bail and had been arraigned in Lewiston District Court on Wednesday, Desjardins said. “It’s protocol right after arraignment that we put the individual in maximum security.”
An officer doing checks every 15 minutes discovered Farrell’s body just after 6 p.m. Attempts to revive him failed, Desjardins said. Farrell had not been on a suicide watch.
“We made all of the contacts that evening,” Desjardins said, alerting Maine State Police and the Department of Corrections. Both launched investigations, which is standard procedure. The jail will do its own internal investigation. All three are independent and ongoing, Desjardins said.
He declined to comment on whether there was anything suspicious about the death.
