Game wardens
STRATTON — On Saturday, Aug. 6, The Dead River Area Historical Society will pay tribute to “The History of Local Game Wardens” hosted by Scott Stevens, who is making a display in the museum of this very subject. Scott is also continuing this heritage as he is a Game Warden himself and has done an extensive study on this history. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The society’s special days are not presentations but a gathering of people knowledgeable about the featured subject. On display in the museum are artifacts, manuscripts and photographs that have been donated or loaned by interested townspeople and descendants of original families of the Dead River Region. Collections from 1850 on include old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.

Wayne author
WAYNE — “Safe in a Box in the Attic,” a true story written by Priscilla B. Stevenson, was originally drafted as a children’s book. It provides a brief memoir of early childhood life in rural Maine during the 1920s. It is also the story of a family heirloom and how technology can unite the past and the present.
A Wayne native, Priscilla, now 94, will be in attendance at the Cary Memorial Library Loon Festival from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Books will be available for purchase and to have a personal inscription from the author. The antique redwork quilt will also be on display, visiting Wayne for the event with its owner, Virginia Sigel of Boston.
