JAY — Amanda Morey sat on the edge of Route 140 crying Thursday as she watched firefighters from several towns work to put a fire out at her mobile home on BJ’s Lane.

Morey, who will turn 28 on Sunday, was consoled by her mother, Harriet Nadeau, and friend, Brittany Pomerleau, both of Jay.

Morey was home when the fire started and was able to get out of the home safely with her dog, Kyia, a shepherd mix. Her husband, Adam Morey, was at work in Turner. The family has no insurance on the home or contents, Amanda Morey and Jay Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said.

Morey said she had arrived home from the store and smelled something burning. She looked around and could find no fire or smoke but then spotted smoke under the couch, she said. She put water on it and thought it was out, she said. She took a nap and woke up to find the home on fire, she said.

Her mother said her daughter called her and she reported the fire for her.

About 25 firefighters from Jay, Livermore Falls, Livermore, Farmington, Wilton and East Dixfield responded to the fire reported at 1:59 p.m.

Flames and smoke rose above the back of the roof. Firefighters had the fire knocked down within 30 minutes, Booker said.

Firefighters worked inside the house, pulling down the ceiling, while firefighters on the outside cut a hole in the roof to vent it.

The fire is believed to have started in the living room near the couch, Booker said.

Rick Shepard, an investigator with the Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal, said Thursday night that the cause is undetermined, Booker said.

The American Red Cross gave the family vouchers for food and clothing, he said. The couple and the dog plan to stay with family and friends, Booker said.
