POLAND — Police are narrowing down the list of suspects in a string of purse-snatchings at Range Pond in July and encouraging beachgoers to lock their cars and stash purses out of sight.

“A lot of the issue has been drivers who left windows down or left vehicles unlocked,” said Lt. Glenn Holt of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s a crime of opportunity.”

Holt said reports had come in of four to five thefts in the first half of July at Range Pond State Park. No damage had been done to the vehicles. Stolen credit cards and checks were later used by thieves.

Police are investigating and have “developed a few suspects,” Holt said. Charges would be theft and burglary of motor vehicles.

“We have this issue every summer,” Holt said. “Any time that you’re leaving your vehicle unattended, especially where there’s a number of people coming and going, (drivers) want to make sure they secure their vehicle.”
