Law enforcement authorities are searching for a man who robbed a New Gloucester convenience store and gas station Tuesday morning.

The man was seen on video surveillance as lying in wait for the clerk near a dumpster at the back of Irving’s Lil’ Mart at 1026 Lewiston Road.  When the female clerk was preparing to leave the store to make a bank deposit, the man approached her from behind and pushed her to the ground at about 7:15 a.m., according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department.

The man ordered the clerk to give him the money. He never showed a weapon, Capt. Jeff Davis said in a written release. She handed him the money for deposit and he fled westbound.

A sheriff’s tracking dog was brought to the scene and searched the area, but failed to locate the suspect, Davis said.

A nearby day care center was locked down during the search as a precaution, Davis said.

The suspect was described as white, between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing between 170 pounds and 190 pounds. He was wearing a brown-colored hooded sweatshirt and a white-colored T-shirt beneath. He also wore dark pants and sneakers, Davis said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to call Detective John Fournier at 774-1444, ext. 2173.
