POLAND SPRING — Poland Spring Water Company recently awarded 20 Good Science Scholarships to Maine high school seniors who are pursuing post-secondary education in science, engineering or the environment. Eight scholarships of $1,000 each were given to members of Poland Regional High School’s class of 2011.

In 2007 Poland Spring established the Good Science Scholarship program and has since awarded nearly $75,000 to high school seniors pursuing a degree in science, engineering or the environment.

This year, the Poland plant awarded three additional scholarships to Poland-area students in memory of Manny Wing, a longtime Poland Spring employee who was also a talented local musician. Wing passed away early this year and to honor his memory the company decided to award three musically inclined high school seniors a $1,000 Manny Wing Music Scholarship. The employees of the Poland bottling plant won a $3,000 cash award from Nestle Waters North America, their parent company, for success driving manufacturing efficiencies and came up with the idea of the Manny Wing Music scholarships using their winnings.

All eight Poland Regional High School scholarship winners and their families attended a celebratory dinner at the Poland Spring bottling plant.

Good Science Scholarships were awarded to the following: Frank Benedict of Poland, attending the University of Maine studying engineering; Joseph Costa of Minot, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Massachusetts, mechanical engineering; Conrad Labbe, Minot, Maine Maritime Academy, marine engineering; Joshua Morgan, Minot, University of Maine, chemistry; and Alex Scales, Poland, University of Maine, engineering.

Manny Wing Music Scholarships were awarded to the following: Ben Albee, Poland, New England School of Communications, audio engineering; Richard Carlson, Poland, University of New Hampshire, music education; and Grahm Kwasnik, Poland, New England School of Communications, audio engineering.
