iPad demos

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library will hold a free demonstration of the library’s iPad from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the Maggie Trafton room. Learn more about the iPad and how it can be used with students. Suzanne Sullivan show the apps that Auburn kindergartners will be using this fall. Open Range

NEW GLOUCESTER — The annual, free “Open Range Day” will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Royal River Rod and Gun Club, Fish Hatchery Road. Open Range Day gives the public the chance to check out the 35-yard and 100-yard shooting ranges, meet and talk to members, and learn about the safety, education and community programs sponsored by the club.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a firearm or two and try the ranges. Members also invite people who have never handled a firearm before. Members come from a broad spectrum of experience including Maine DIFW, law enforcement and military as well as casual target shooters and fishing enthusiasts.

Gaming tourny

AUBURN — A Gaming Tournament will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Sunday, Aug. 28, at Applebees, 559 Center St.

Teams will be competing against each other in the popular game Call of Duty: Black Ops for both cash prizes and sponsored rewards. The boy responsible for the idea of the tournament has already contacted companies both big and small to create an environment that pulls an audience in. With competition gaming growing with each passing year, the creators of the L/A Gaming Tournaments look to build a monthly tournament that excites both the casual player and the hardcore gamer in an environment full of teamwork and commitment to show a new side of gaming that doesn’t involve a bag of chips on the living room sofa.

Country music

MECHANIC FALLS — The Down East Country Music Association Inc. will hold their 31st annual awards show at noon Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Silver Spur Club, routes 121 and 11.

This is an afternoon filled with presentation of awards and entertainment.

Door admission is $7 per adult, $2 per child under the age of 12.

Food concession will be open throughout the show. There will be a 50/50 drawing and raffles.

Phlebotomy

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer Introduction to Phlebotomy from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evenings from Sept. 6 to Oct. 25 or Thursday evenings from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27. The cost is $450 and includes materials and book.

A combination of lecture, lab and hands-on practical experience, this course will allow you to develop the skills needed to work in an entry level position in medical facilities as a phlebotomist. Coursework includes selecting and preparing the skin puncture site, collecting specimens, adhering to the proper health and safety guidelines, patient/technician relationship and clerical duties associated with proper record keeping of laboratory tests. Upon completion, students may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and other health care settings.

Swim lessons

AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA announces open registration for youth swim lessons. Session one runs for eight weeks, from Sept. 6 through Oct. 26.

Classes and prerequisites have been redesigned in order to make a child a complete swimmer and to build more directly upon previously learned skills. A child is advanced to the next level only when he or she can proficiently and safely perform the skills within his or her level. The purpose of the  youth swim lessons program is to develop and improve competency in swimming, along with confidence and endurance.

The class offerings are as follows: Parent & Baby (six months-two years); Parent & Tot (2-5 years); Tiny Tots (2-5 years), beginner and advanced classes are offered; and Level 1-5 classes for those 6-12 years of age. All YMCA aquatic programs are designed to instill confidence in participants and make learning new skills fun and challenging in a positive way.
