WINTHROP — Shortly after Megan Ferland graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington last May, she suffered a fever, headache and unusual confusion and was taken to the hospital. Soon after, Ferland’s symptoms included seizures and she was transported by LifeFlight to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Within a few hours of arriving at the hospital, Paul and Sherry Ferland learned that their daughter was showing symptoms of a very rare disorder — Paraneoplastic Syndrome — diagnosed in less than 500 previously recorded cases worldwide.
On Thursday, Sept. 1, the Winthrop Rotary Club, along with dozens of community members, will host a “spaghetti suppah” to help ease the tremendous financial burden on the Ferland family.
The benefit supper will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Parish Hall, Route 133. Cost is $7 for adults; $5 for children and seniors; $20 for families.
There will also be a raffle of donated goods and a pie and cake sale. Anyone wishing to make financial contributions may mail checks payable to The Megan Ferland Family Fund/Winthrop Rotary, PO Box 453, Winthrop, ME 04364. Those wishing to volunteer of make product donations for the raffle should email: FerlandFamilySuppah@gmail.com
