Thrifty furniture
SOUTH PARIS — There will be a furniture sale Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 659 Park St. at the Thrifty Gift Shop parking lot. This will benefit the food pantry and will take place rain or shine.
Duplicate bridge
OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Friday.
Finishing first in flight A were Pete Cummings (South Paris) and Dick Allen (New Gloucester), tied for second and third were Pat Quinn (Otisfield) and Georgette Jewell (Norway) with Mike Quinn (Otisfield) and Bailey Geeslin (Bridgton), fourth were Cindy and Bob Kirchherr who also were first in flight B and C.
Second in flight B were Marilyn and Richard Canton (Bridgton), third were Cynthia Clifford (Lewiston) and Claire Lyons (Lewiston).
Finishing second in flight C were Milt McKeen (Bridgton) and Jim Krainin (Naples).

Seniors meet
BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Funky Red Barn. The menu will be a choice of prime rib or baked haddock.
Reservations must be made before Sept. 7 at noon by calling Caroline Gould at 824-3226 or Arlene Lowell at 824-2877 with your choice. The price is $10.
‘What is it’
LOCKE MILLS — The Greenwood Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the society building.
The meeting will be a “What is It” night. Attendees should bring something and the others will guess what it is and what it is used for. Everyone is welcome.
Pine needle art
BRYANT POND — Julie Daye will be presenting her Pine Needle Weaving at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Whitman Memorial Library. Daye uses pine needles gathered in Florida. The program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.
VHS sale
PARIS — Paris Public Library will hold another VHS tape sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the old Paris Farmers’ Union store at the corner of Skilling Avenue and Main Street (Route 26).
Over the years, many VHS tapes have been donated, resulting in the library owning multiple copies of many titles. More than 2,000 tapes will be on sale. Tapes will cost $1 each or eight for $5. Donations to the sale are welcome.

Maine Apple Sunday
BRIDGTON — The Bridgton Community Center in cooperation with Five Fields Farm is sponsoring “All Things Apple” from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. Dumplings, breads, pies, cakes, crisps, cheesecakes and more will be served. All proceeds will benefit the Bridgton Fuel Collaborative. FMI: 647-3116.
Socrates Cafe
WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held at the Waterford Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome.
The topic for the September meeting is “Could Community Service Help Solve Maine’s Problems?” The facilitator will be Ed Somers.
Due to the Labor Day holiday the meeting in September is postponed from the regular practice of meeting on the first Monday of each month.

Homeschool program
PARIS — The Paris Public Library invites homeschoolers and families to an informational meeting regarding this year’s geography and cultural studies program at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The 2011-12 school year will focus on the world’s major rivers with a heavy focus on the Mississippi River along with its effects on the surrounding land areas, its people and wildlife. The Multi-Age Geo River Kids will engage in river vocabulary, function, geography, life styles, rivers in literature, shared experiences, projects, games and more. National Geographic maps, “The World’s Rivers,” provided by the Geographic Alliance of Maine, will be available. Schedule and expectations will be discussed.
Each Multi-Age Geo River Kid should come prepared at this first gathering to share a river experience or a fact, a vocabulary word or a function of a river. A story or selection about a river will be read and discussed.
