Yard sale
AUBURN — A huge community yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27, at the Turner Community Church parking lot at the corner of Whitney and Vernon streets. Tables are available for $5.
Infant and children’s clothes, household items and more will be for sale. Proceeds from the tables will help sponsor the “Kids Klub”activities program.

Degree day
WINTHROP — A Degree Day will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Winthrop Grange, sponsored by Androscoggin Pomona Grange. After the first two degrees, a light supper will be served for a small fee, followed by the third and fourth degrees. Any grange having candidates are invited to bring them to this event. Reading series
LEWISTON — The Friends of Lewiston Public Library will sponsor a Maine Humanities Council Let’s Talk About It reading and discussion series. The series chosen for this year is “Entering Nature: Contemporary Views of the Human Self in the Natural World.”
The series will have 24 participants reading one book per month from September through December and then meeting on the third Thursday of each month to discuss the book with the help of a scholar/facilitator provided by the Maine Humanities Council.

Book discussion sessions will take place on the following dates. All sessions will start at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Couture Room on the first floor of the library.
Sept. 15, “The Tree” by John Fowles; Oct. 20, “Lives of a Cell” by Lewis Thomas; Nov. 17 (snowdate of Nov. 21), “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” by Annie Dillard; and Dec. 15 (snowdate of Dec. 19), “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey.
Facilitator this year will be Anna Sims Bartel. Bartel has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Cornell University and is the former associate director of the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates College.

History Barn open
NEW GLOUCESTER — The September Open House at the New Gloucester History Barn, Route 231 (behind the Town Hall), will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 3. The special exhibit this month will be photos and artifacts related to New Gloucester schools. The exhibit of historic vehicles remains on display. Admission is free.
Herbal Christmas

Shaker programs
NEW GLOUCESTER — The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will host several programs and events Saturday, Sept. 10.
A gel printing workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will make a beautiful accordion book using gel printing techniques and Shaker herbs. All levels of experience are welcome. Fee is $40, including materials; preregistration required.
The R & R Spinners will demonstrate spinning techniques along with a display of their creations beginning at 10 a.m. Free.
Guided nature hikes will be offered at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children, under 6 free. Reservations recommended.

CNA course
TURNER — MSAD #52 Adult and Community Education will hold a CNA class starting Oct. 11. The 180-hour certified nursing assistant course is designed to provide the skills and experience to be Maine State Certified. Candidates must be dedicated, hard working, reliable and compassionate with an interest in a health care career.
