CANTON — A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a 100-year-old barn on Route 108 early Tuesday morning, but firefighters were able to save the nearby house and a radiator business.

“That barn meant a lot to me,” said Robert Wing, owner of Bob’s Radiator shop.

Assistant fire Chief Mark Blanchette was first on the scene and found the barn engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Peru, Dixfield, Rumford, Mexico, Livermore and Sumner also responded to the 6:30 a.m. call, he said.

Blanchette said one team worked to save the house and another the business.

A witness said the sign reading “Hill and Dale Farm” was destroyed with barn.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known, Blanchette said. An investigator from the Office of the State Fire Marshal was at the scene Tuesday.
