NORWAY — September is National Library Card Sign-up Month and the Norway Memorial Library wants to make sure that all children in the RSU 17 school district the most important school supply of all — a library card.

Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. Most public libraries (89.6 percent) provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework.

Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers.

A child who is at least 5 years old and lives within the RSU 17 school district is eligible to get a library card at the Norway Memorial Library.

In honor of National Library Card Sign-up Month the Norway Memorial Library children’s room is providing a free surprise to all children when they pick up their library cards.

Everyone who receives a library card will have their photo taken to be added to the bulletin board in the children’s room.

For more information on how to sign up for a card, visit the library at 258 Main St., call 743-5309 or visit www.norway.lib.me.us.
