OXFORD — Oxford Hills School District Superintendent Rick Colpitts announced shortly after 8 p.m. Monday night that schools will not open Tuesday because of power outages and road washouts from Tropical Storm Irene.

Schools in the eight towns had been scheduled to open Monday for the year, but the damage from Sunday’s storm postponed the start of classes.

Colpitts said Monday that none of the 10 school buildings had any damage from the storm.

The district’s central offices at the Oxford Shopping Plaza on Route 26 in Oxford had no power Monday morning. There was also no power at the West Paris, Hebron, Otisfield and Waterford elementary schools, he said.

The road to the Hebron Station school was blocked by a tree with wires lying across the road and a downed tree motorists were allowed to pass under but buses could not.

“There was enough room for a car to slide under, but not a bus,” Colpitts said.

Other roads that were closed included Stearns Hill Road in West Paris, Whittemore and Island roads in Oxford.

Telstar Regional High School in Bethel and the Boxberry School in Oxford are set to open on schedule Wednesday. Neither of the schools sustained any damage in the storm.

Hebron Academy had a few tree branches down. It is due to open the middle of next week. Oxford Hills Christian Academy in Paris had no storm damage and is planning to open this week.
