BUCKFIELD — The Labor Day Parade on Monday had one of the largest crowds ever lining the streets to view the circus themed floats and other entries.
Waving, cheering and smiling, viewers showed obvious pride as the American Legion Post paraded by with the American flag. A few old veterans stood and saluted or placed their hats over their hearts.
The circus theme brought an abundance of clowns to the procession. One adult caught painting her face said, “I made you laugh, and that’s what it is all about.”
The drummers kept a good beat for the marching groups. There were acrobats doing routines, young pony cart drivers, Kora Temple Shiners Krazy Kops driving their miniature cars in loops and swirls, and some antique cars.
A total of eight fire engines plus rescue vehicles participated, including those from the towns of Buckfield, Hebron, Paris, Sumner and Turner.
Some of the women who operate the Swap Shop at the transfer station rode in the parade wearing colorful, stylish outfits from the shop. They threw recycled stuffed toys and Mardi Gras beads from their inventory.
State Rep. Terry Hayes of Buckfield marched with a group of young people carrying a sign promoting CivilityProject.org. The organization challenges all people, not just politicians, to bring back civility and respectability as staples of American politics and life.
After the parade, the crowd made its way to the ball field to view exhibits, participate in contests, eat pie and other goodies, listen to music and enjoy a good time.
