Sportsmen’s Forum

PARIS – Chandler Woodcock, commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, will lead a public question-and-answer session during an informal Sportsmen’s Forum hosted by the Norway-Paris Fish & Game Club on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Woodcock will talk about his role in the department’s efforts and answer questions about hunting, fishing and outdoors-related topics in Maine. Wildlife and fisheries biologists from the department, as well as members of the Maine Warden Service, are also expected to attend.

The public is invited to participate in the free event, which will include a potluck supper in the new Norway-Paris Fish & Game Club building at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following, Woodcock will make brief remarks before opening the floor to questions.

The new Norway-Paris Fish & Game Club building on Buckfield Road in South Paris will be formally dedicated in a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 10.

First aid/CPR

OXFORD — An American Heart Association first aid and CPR class will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Public Safety Building.

This is a certificate course and is accepted for daycare providers, after school programs, Maine guides, loggers, trainers and any other non-health care related venue.

Other dates the course is being offered are Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 10. Participants need only attend one class day for certification.

For health care providers, there will be a Basic Life Support CPR recertification class at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Other dates the course is being offered are Oct. 11 and Dec. 13.

Travelers meet

MECHANIC FALLS — Members of Twin City Council of the United Commercial Travelers of America will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Bucknam Oaks. After the business meeting, a spaghetti supper will be served. All members and guests are welcome.

Apple day

BRIDGTON — A fun time featuring everything apple, including breads, muffins, cheesecakes, pies, cakes, crisps and more, will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Bridgton Community Center. Proceeds support the BCC Fuel Collaborative. The goal is to raise $10,000 to assist Bridgton residents with emergency fuel deliveries in the coming winter.

Free pancakes

NORWAY — The Second Congregational Church, UCC, 205 Main St., will hold a free pancake breakfast from 9 to 9:50 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Sunday School registration will also be held from 9:30-9:50 a.m. and worship will be at 10 a.m. The choir returns to worship this week. The church is handicap accessible. Retired teachers

HARRISON — OCEA-R retired teachers will meet beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Bolsters Mills Community Church, Bolsters Mills Road. The business meeting will take place at 11, lunch at noon, and at 12:45 p.m. a program, “Teacher Retirement, Where to Go from Here?”

Ganderia benefit

OXFORD — A bake sale and bottle drive will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, at the corner of Pottle Road and Route 26, next to Konehead Ice Cream. All proceeds benefit the Ganderia Middle School in Oxford.

Baked bean contest

OXFORD — The Oxford County Fair Museum will hold its annual baked bean contest on the last day of the fair, Saturday, Sept. 17. The beans should be made from one pound of any dried beans. Hot beans should be delivered to the museum between 1 and 2 p.m.

Judging will be done by fair-goers who pay a small fee for sampling all of the beans and casting their vote. The top prize will be a $50 gift card donated by Hannaford Supermarket of Oxford. Second place wins a $25 gift certificate from The Lake Store in Norway. Third place will be a $10 gift certificate from Books-n-Things, Norway. Judging will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. (or until beans run out). It is best if beans are delivered in a crock-pot in order to keep warm.

Last year’s blue ribbon winner was, once again, Sue Stevens of Albion. Brent Jandreau of Portland took second place.

Yard sale

WATERFORD — An indoor yard sale will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Wilkins House, next door to the church on Plummer Hill.

For those who like to make cards, there will be Stampin’ Up stamp sets and miscellaneous supplies. There will also be books, puzzles and crafts. There is something for everyone. Proceeds from the sale go to the improvement fund of the buildings.

Finnish-Americans

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Following a brief business meeting, a video will be shown of the Wife Carrying Championships held at Sunday River last October. A coffee social will close out the day.
