Cruiz Nite

AUBURN — The United New Auburn Association will present Kids Nite/Cruiz Nite from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Rolly’s Diner. This will be the last cruiz nite for the season this year and will return in the spring.

There will be activities for children and adults alike. A pig will be roasted; donation of $5 per person, with the proceeds going towards a winter festival in New Auburn in the coming months.

‘Boot Drive’

AUBURN — On Friday, Sept. 9, the Auburn and Lewiston Fire Fighters will team up to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The collection will start at approximately 3:30 p.m. and end at dusk. They will be collecting donations at the intersection of Union, Center and Turner streets.

Help the fire fighters fill the boot and raise money for children affected by Muscular Dystrophy. All of the proceeds will go to the MDA to help families in Maine.

Conservation day

POLAND SPRING — The Student Conservation Association , a national leader in youth service and stewardship, will join Poland Spring Water Company employees in Poland Spring, for a joint “Employee Conservation Service Day” at Range Ponds State Park from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 10.

SCA and Poland Spring employee volunteers will remove invasive species and rehabilitate outbuildings at the park. This project is part of a larger partnership between Nestle Waters North America/NWNA (Poland Spring’s parent company) and SCA to help engage and mobilize NWNA employees to volunteer in their communities on important local conservation projects. Saturday’s effort also marks a nationwide Day of Service in honor of the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, while also supporting SCA’s mission to build the next generation of conservation leaders.

Participants should enter at the front gate and proceed to the parking area. Follow signage for SCA/Nestle Waters’ check-in.

Toy run

AUGUSTA — The United Bikers of Maine will hold the annual toy run from Augusta to Windsor on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Participants will get organized at the Augusta Civic Center, with the ride beginning promptly at noon.

Organizers are expecting between 16,000 and 20,000 bikers to donate between 9,000 and 14,000 toys to be distributed to Maine children this holiday season.

Author to speak

LEWISTON — Local author Martha Stevens-David of Minot will appear at  Lewiston Public Library from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Couture Conference Room.

David will speak about her recently published book, “Autobiography of a Simple Soul,” which is a collection of short stories about growing up in the small Aroostook County town of Ashland. Wishing to be a writer since the age of nine, she has worked on her short story collection for nearly 30 years and it was only after retiring from the Bates College Museum of Art in 2008 that she began sharing her work. Martha also writes children’s stories and poetry.

Lakeside Chapter

WALES — Lakeside Chapter #60, O. E. S. will meet Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Grange/Masonic Hall, 322 Centre Road, to honor the stations of conductress and associate conductress. Grand officers have been invited.

At the August Meeting, Robert M. L. Cone, past grand patron, presented Brett Jervis with his Rob Morris Jewel for Bertha Cadigan, general Grand Chapter committee chairman and past grand matron of Maine, who was unable to attend. Jervis was congratulated for his high level of involvement in recruiting members.

Pine Cone, Pioneer and Lakeside Chapter each took home $41 as their share of the ESTARL supper proceeds. This money will go to Grand Chapter for scholarships to fund scholars in religious studies. All members are welcome at the 7 p.m. meeting.

Dempsey dinner

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free prostate cancer dinner and learn to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Living Longer with Prostate Cancer” will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at CMMC, 12 High St., in conference room A.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Stacey Kenfield, ScD Dept of Epidemiology and Nutrition, research associate and instructor at Harvard Medical School will share new research on how diet and lifestyle factors relate to prevention, progression and improved survival in men with prostate cancer.

Kenfield directs and oversees the clinical follow-up of the prostate cancer survivors’ cohort of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study at Harvard, comprised of more than 6,500 men. Her recent publications on physical activity, recurrence and survival were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Cancer Research in February and June.
