LEWISTON — On Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m., the YWCA of Central Maine will host an open house for members of the public and its donors to thank the Lewiston/Auburn community for its help in keeping the YWCA doors open.
It was one year ago when the YWCA announced its closure due to ongoing financial problems. With the help of the Gendron family and hundreds of people in the community, the YWCA has been able to raise money allowing it to reduce its mortgage and ultimately stay open.
Over the past year, the YWCA has made steps to improve its facility including an energy audit, a complete filter system replacement for the pool, as well as numerous cosmetic changes. The YWCA will offer self-guided tours of the facility so that the public can view the changes.
Also, there will be music from 2:30 to 3:30 by the Tinpanic Steel Band, free face painting by Melanie Therrien of Wicked Illustrations, stories by Mother Goose, refreshments and a silent auction.
In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack, Tinpanic will play “America the Beautiful” followed by a moment of silence. In addition to all of the above, there will be a send off to Doug Breunig, Dr. Tom Page and Betsy McGrail, who will be swimming the Alcatraz Invitational Swim on Sept. 17 to benefit the YWCA.
