DIXFIELD — As part of her effort to earn the prestigious Silver Award, Abigayle Johnson, 15, of Peru, is organizing a sidewalk clean-up event for Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1-4 p.m. Her plan is to cover the area from Towle’s Store up to Ellis’s Store, cleaning up all of the streets up to and around Dirigo High School, where she attends 10th grade.

“Hopefully, in starting this event, it will motivate people to stop littering and visually defacing Dixfield,” says Abigayle, who has nicknamed this project “Clean & Green.” Caring for the environment and taking a leadership role are two important facets of the Girl Scout message, both of which she has taken to heart as she has planned for this final step of the award.

Abigayle is also working on a plan with the school administration to make this an annual event. Students at Dirigo High School are required to log 60 hours of community service as a graduation requirement, and this would be a great opportunity for them to earn some of those hours.

Abigayle is looking for volunteers to help this first clean-up day become a success; call 562-8787 to help out.
