FARMINGTON — Creative Recovery and Empowerment For Women sessions began Sept. 27 and will continue through Dec. 13 on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants can join at any time.
Attendees will explore themselves through talking/listening, art and writing and will learn skills to heal emotional pain and manage symptoms of traumatic stress. No previous art/writing experience necessary.

Flu shots
FARMINGTON — Flu shots will be available from the Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County at the following locations.
Thursday, Sept. 29: Rangeley Library, noon to 2 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 30: Webster Hall, Kingfield, 10 a.m. to noon; Eustis Town Office, 1 to 4 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 3: Carrabassett Valley Town Office, noon to 3 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 13: Weld Town Office, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Carthage Town Office, noon to 2 p.m.
Due to the cost of the vaccine, there is a suggested donation of $20 at Healthy Community Coalition clinics (or by donating what you can afford). Insurance, Medicare or Medicaid cannot be accepted. The Healthy Community Coalition purchases all vaccine used and appreciates donations to help cover costs.
Flu shots will be provided to those individuals 18 years old and older. Those who are under 18 are recommended to see their primary care medical provider.

Spruce open house
JAY — RSU 73 Spruce Mountain Adult Education will hold an open house Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. The center is located at 13 Community Drive, in the basement of the gym connected to the middle school.
Participants can tour the facility, meet the staff and learn how the adult ed program can meet one’s educational needs. A drawing will be held, with a first prize of $50 in education supplies and second and third prizes of a flash drive. The drawing will held at the conclusion of the open house.
Students can still sign up for the following enrichment courses: Introduction to reflexology, Spanish for beginners, or Beacon Hospice volunteer. Call 897-6384 to register.
Birding program
FARMINGTON — Western Maine Audubon Society’s monthly program will be bird migration in the Gulf of Maine, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at UMF, Roberts C 23.
The Gulf of Maine with its complex network of shorelines, islands and bays, is a super highway for birds travelling not only to Maine but on into Canada from the southern hemisphere.
Biologist Rebecca Holberton has travelled to both poles and in between to investigate bird navigation. She and her team have spent the last two years examining the movement of birds in the Gulf and will present her findings. The program is free and open to the public.
Free luncheon
FARMINGTON — Old South First Congregational Church will serve its free monthly community luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. This month’s menu includes roast pork, rice pilaf, green beans, apple sauce and apple crisp.

Community breakfast
KINGFIELD — A community all-you-can-eat breakfast is being offered Saturday, Oct. 8, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Kingfield United Methodist Church.
The menu will include sausage gravy with biscuits, pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, home fries, muffins, coffee and juice. The cost is $5 per person. A discounted rate is available for children.

Ice cream social
STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, for Columbus Day. An Ice Cream Social to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. will include a brownie ala mode made and served by historical society volunteers.
Charlie Bruce will entertain with songs like “Jud Strunk’s A Daisy a Day.” All are welcome.
The Dead River Area Historical Society is open every weekend throughout July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by advance appointment year-round. Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
