NORWAY — On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Western Foothills Land Trust will hold a volunteer trail builder day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Roberts Farm Preserve, 64 Roberts Road.

Rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 9, at the same time.

Lee Dassler of the West Foothills Land Trust said volunteers should wear comfortable shoes, gloves and bring pruners, loppers, shovels, water and a sandwich. The trust will provide chips and cookies. Crews will be systematically clipping roots, trimming branches and small trees along the major trails. Other crews will be working to reroute and extend the snowshoe/hiking trail.

This summer, with funding from the Maine Department of Conservation’s Recreational Trails Program, Mike Cooper and Sarah Weafer of Caribou Recreation LLC, in Bethel, completed the remaining nine-foot wide beginners’ trails. Anyone who skied or ran the 5 K C.A. Stephens trail last season will appreciate the less demanding options the new trails will provide, Dassler said. In addition, the new trails are very pleasing in the way they meander through the core of Roberts Preserve.

Caribou Recreation also added a significant number of culverts and water bars to the C.A. Stephens trail to with drainage.

The trails at Roberts Farm Preserve are used extensively, including by students in the Oxford Hills School District who held a three-way cross country meet there last weekend, the season-ending Roberts Farm 5 K race set for Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering on Oct. 8 or running on Oct. 23 should email the trust at: wflt@megalink.net.
