LEWISTON — Safe Schools/Healthy Students invites families from Lewiston and Auburn to attend the first-ever Family Day event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Lewiston Armory.
Family Day offers all Lewiston-Auburn area parents, students and community members a chance to learn more about Safe Schools Healthy Students programs and services in a fun, activities-filled educational environment. The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative encourages schools and communities to work in partnership to create safe and healthy school environments in which youth can learn and develop.
“Families are at the core of what we do,” said Rosemary Kooy, director of the Lewiston-Auburn Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. “Engaging parents helps us more fully support students and help them succeed.”
Family Day is about building healthier and stronger families and supporting parents who are supportive of their children and their children’s learning. All Lewiston-Auburn families with preschool and school age children are invited to attend.
The event also aims to encourage home and school collaboration, provide parents with effective parenting strategies, resources and links to services through a wide range of free exhibits, demos, workshops and healthy snacks.
The event will also feature a DJ, performance by singer/songwriter Lisa Redfern and martial arts demonstrations. Oldham Research Institute will donate a door prize of 100 gallons of heating oil as a drawing for families who complete a parent survey during the event.
“All children have the right to live their lives free of threat or the reality of violence,” Kooy said. “Feeling safe, supported and respected at school is both a fundamental right of all students and fundamental to effective learning.”
