Final Art Walk

LEWISTON – Art Walk Lewiston Auburn will transform the downtown areas into art districts for the evening for the final time this season on Friday, Sept. 30.

Over the course of their inaugural summer, Art Walk Lewiston Auburn has drawn  more than 1,000 art enthusiasts from the L/A communities and beyond to the downtown area, showcasing more than 75 local artists. Their final event this year promises to be their largest, with The Vault and Captive Elements Art House & L/A Magazine hosting their grand opening events on Lisbon Street during the Art Walk.

In addition, LA Arts will host musician Zach Jones and the Lewiston Public Library will showcase a film made by Lewiston’s own Craig Saddlemire. For a complete listing of venues participating visit www.ArtWalkLewistonAuburn.com.

Feline Friends sale

GREENE — Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends harvest yard and bake sale that was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1, has been rescheduled, due to a poor weather report, to Saturday, Oct. 8, with a rain date of Sunday, Oct. 9, starting at 8 a.m. The sale will be held on Route 202 across from Hurricane’s Deli.

In addition to some great items for sale and yummy baked goodies, there will be coffee and hot cider.

Byzantine Mass

LEWISTON — The Byzantine Divine Liturgy (or Mass) will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 122 Ash St., corner of Bartlett and Ash streets. The first of October is the fest of the Protection of the Mother of God on the Byzantine calender.

The Rev. Robert A. (Basil) Parent will be the celebrant assisted by Deacon Stephen McGrath. Parent is a Byzantine Greek-Catholic priest of the Diocese of Newton, Mass. for the Melkite-Greek Catholic Church and is presently helping the Diocese of Portland as Chaplain to the St. Gregory at the Great Latin Mass Chaplaincy. McGrath was recently ordained to the deaconate and serves at St. Ann Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Danbury, Conn.

The Melkite Greek Catholic Church is one of many Eastern Catholic Churches and follows the Byzantine of Greek Rite. Those Catholics which follow the Byzantine Rite are the second most numerous group of Catholics after those that follow the Roman Rite.

All are invited to attend the Liturgy. Anyone interested in the Byzantine Catholic Churches or who is a member of any of the eastern churches and is interested in the future services is invited to a meeting after the Liturgy. Also, there will be time for discussion and questions following the Liturgy for the general public.

Seniors meeting

LEWISTON — Lewiston Senior Citizens will hold their monthly membership meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the Multi-Purpose Center. The meeting will feature a presentation by SeniorsPlus staff members Sue Holmes and Cathy Brill on education programs and services for seniors. Ed Barrett, Lewiston City Administrator, will present an update and answer questions on the future use of the Multi-Purpose Center and implications for the seniors. Thomas College

WATERVILLE — A representative from Thomas College will visit the following school on Tuesday, Oct. 4: Lisbon High School at 9 a.m., Lewiston High School at 9:45 a.m., Edward Little High School in Auburn at 11:30 a.m. and St. Dominic Academy in Auburn at 1 p.m.

The representative will meet with students to discuss Thomas’ academic and sports programs and its residential life opportunities.

WINTHROP — The Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting will take place Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union, at the intersection of Route 202 and Highland Avenue. A light breakfast will be provided beginning at 7:15 a.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 and end promptly at 8:30.

Representatives from the local Lions and Rotary service clubs will be the presenters. They will speak about the background and history of the Lions Clubs International and the Rotary International and provide information about their mission and involvement in the local community.

The cost is $5 per person, to be paid at the door. The meeting is open to the public. No reservations are required.

Costume swap

DURHAM — A Halloween Costume Swap will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Durham Eureka Center.

To participate, simply drop off your child’s clean, gently used costume at any of the following locations during scheduled dates and times to receive a ticket to use on swap day. One ticket will be given per costume. Drop off sites are The New Gloucester Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, Durham Get & Go from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, and the Durham Community School from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.
