Family festival
SABATTUS — The Community Free Baptist Church Family Fall Festival was postponed last weekend due to weather. It will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the church on Main Street.
Members of the community and surrounding areas are invited to participate in free games and activities. Activities for all ages include a bounce house and slide, face painting, horse rides, apple smashing and a variety of games, including a life-sized version of Angry Birds. A hay maze and games for the younger children will also be available. Teens are invited to try their hand at several activities geared toward them.
A cookout will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Free grilled or steamed hot dogs, chips and soda will be served. There will be a bake table with sweet treats available to purchase. All proceeds will be used toward the church’s growing teen ministry. For more information, call 375-4337.
Poland Shakers
POLAND — Lenny Brooks, director of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum and Library, will be the guest speaker at the October Person to Person Program on Sunday, Oct. 9, in the community room of the Ricker Memorial Library. The evening will begin with a potluck supper and conversation hour at 5:30. The program will follow at 6:30.
Brooks’ topic will be The Shakers of Poland, Maine. Shakers have lived in the area since the 1700s. He will focus on the Poland Hill and Square House “families.”
Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge, but guests are asked to bring a casserole, salad or dessert to share.
Golden Age Group
AUBURN — The October meeting of the Golden Age Group of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
A short presentation will take place promptly after the Harvest Dinner meal in the lower level meeting room of Sacred Heart Church and prior to the business meeting and election of officers for 2012. The 12:45 presentation will be by Jacqueline Jancaitis, DPT, a physical therapist from St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
Members are reminded to bring cookies or squares for the cookie swap and nut selections for the Harvest Fair baskets.
Gathering time is 11 a.m. to give members time to socialize prior to the noon dinner, presentation and meeting.

Healing art
LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a series of free workshops to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Healing Art Workshop” will take place Fridays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at CMMC, 60 High St., in the Conference Classroom.
Lenora Leibowitz, well-known local artist, will lead three free workshops involving meditation, visualizing and then collage/painting. No art experience required, and all supplies are provided.

Chili, chowder
LEWISTON — The Lewiston Elks lodge will hold its Chili/Chowder Cook off at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct 14, at 1675 Lisbon St. Individuals or businesses interested in entering their favorite chili or chowder dish are welcome. The cost is $5 for those who wold like to taste test all dishes entered into the contest. The fee will be waived for individuals who enter a dish.
There will be a People’s Choice award for each category.
There will be an auction to raise funds for the Elks National Foundation, a charity within the Elks that sponsors community projects, scholarships and youth activities. For information, call 784-4801.
