JAY — The town deputy financial director’s position has been eliminated as of Sept. 30 for financial and budgeting reasons, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said Tuesday.

The position and the need for it were discussed during budget preparation for the 2011-12 year. The town office had handled finances for the Jay School Department but Jay schools have consolidated with Livermore and Livermore Falls to make Regional School Unit 73 and those matters are now handled there.

Selectmen and the Budget Committee approved funding the deputy finance position for the year this past spring, knowing that the position would be assessed after the beginning of the new fiscal year to see if it was needed.

Cushman said she didn’t wait until August to assess the position.

She spoke to the Board of Selectmen in July and informed them that she planned to eliminate the position.

“It was a matter of financing and budgeting. We’re going to try and do without it,” she said.

Jill Gingras of Jay, who held the position, worked her last day Sept. 30. She said then that she didn’t know what she was going to do but planned to explore her options.
