NORWAY — Norway’s native son and well known author C.A. Stephens will be the topic of a program at the Norway Historical Society on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. There will be a presentation of three Norway locations that pertain to Stephens life, followed by a tour of these sites. Local C. A Stephens experts Larry Glatz, Wini Mott and Charles Longley will be on hand to offer information on the areas to be visited. These include the Rose Quartz Well and the site of the Laboratory, Tom’s Fort, and Upton Ridge, the site of C.A. Stephens’ boyhood home.
Charles Ashbury Stephens grew up in Norway on Upton Ridge and, although he was an only child, he was surrounded by many relatives on neighboring farms. He wrote fictional stories about that life that were very popular and published nationally in a family oriented magazine called “The Youth’s Companion.” He traveled the world and wrote other stories about these adventures. In later life he became a medical doctor, returned to live in Norway and did research on longevity. He was ahead of his time in this interest and believed in the idea of physical fitness to promote long life.
This program will also celebrate Stephens’ birthday Oct. 21, 1844, and the 80th year of his death in 1931. Following refreshments of cake and ice cream, participants will carpool to the tour locations. The public is welcome and there is no charge to attend.
