100 years ago, 1911

Probably not in recent years has there been such a crowd of spectators at the Lewiston Municipal Court as there was yesterday forenoon. Long before it was time to open the doors the corridors were filled with men and boys eager to get a glimpse at the six Greeks who were to be tried on the charge of engaging in a riot. Police were established at every door and after the seats in the court room had been filled none were allowed to enter else they had business there.

50 years ago, 1961

LISBON FALLS — Eleven of Lisbon Falls’ 17 reserve policemen, stripped of their sidearms, resigned Monday, protesting they were being treated “like a bunch of Boy Scouts.”

The board of selectmen recently passed a decree forbidding the reserve police unit from wearing sidearms, saying it had received several complaints.

“If the selectmen want to treat us like a bunch of Boy Scouts, we have no desire to serve,” said Reserve Police Capt. Donald Joseph.

25 years ago, 1986

Eight brand new buses have arrived and will be added to the Western Maine Transportation Service (WMTS) bus fleet to replace aging buses. All the vehicles are lift equipped so they can transport handicapped persons confined to a wheelchair without removing them from the chair. Six of the buses have the capacity to carry 19 passengers and two passengers in wheelchairs. The other two buses will carry 14 passengers and two in wheelchairs.
