LEWISTON — The Rooper’s Senior Lions defeated the Bruce Fournier Construction Senior Steelers to cap off an undefeated season and capture the Senior division championship for Lewiston FLY Football at Garcelon Field on the Bates College Campus.
The Lions, coached by Dion Jackson, Walter Moyse, Barry Pomerleau and Nick Jackson, utilized a patient and stingy defense, combined with an explosive offense to capture their first title.
The Steelers, coached by Coach of the Year Jay Burns and Chris Nichols, dominated the first 10 minutes of the game. They used hard running by Jazznel Burns, Gabe Nichols, Jason Gonzales and Garrett Poussard to keep the Lions offense off the field.
After holding the Steelers scoreless, the Lions needed only one play to score. Senior Division offensive MVP Stefan Porter broke free for a long touchdown run. The Lions continued to dominate offensively, running behind Nate Mercier, the Senior Division Lineman of the Year. Nick Harnden, Senior division defensive MVP, led that unit. Also standing out on both sides of the ball were Desmond Jackson, Davion Jackson, Bennie Montgomery, Jordan Palmer, Caleb Cole, Jared Rubin, Julian Raines, Haydn Dumont, Jordan Dumont, Dominick Adams, Brandon Keith-Williams and Jacob McBride.
In the Junior Division, the Grimmel’s Gas Up Giants won their third consecutive championship, defeating the American Engraving Junior Lions 7-0 at Lewiston High School.
The Giants scored a quick touchdown, and then both teams exhibited outstanding defense. The Lions kept the Giants out of the endzone despite the Giants having first-and-goal from the Lions 6-yard line.
The Lions defense, which gave up a division low 4.5 points per game, was led by Xaviar Jackson, Dylon Jackson, Jordyn Rubin, Ricky Cote, Miles Teague, Isaiah Teague, Cody Tabor, Jayden Munroe, Gunnar Winslow, Jackson Boswell, Alex Roy, Gage Jordan, Ben Dostie Robert Dostie, Jaylen Raines, Ryan Bennett, Corbin Martel, Jakeem Cope, Tanner Holbrook and Jacob Flynn.
The Giants were led on both sides of the ball by Gordon Beckwith, Lucas Nichols, Brandon Dube, Junior Division “Lineman of the Year” Thomas Brochu, Connor Kaplinger, Evan Raymond, Shawn Braxton, Cayden Bragdon, Kenny Scales, Kamron Bisson, Jaiden Caron, Devin Corliss, Savannah Corliss, Kayden Estes, Anthony Krantz, Garrett Mack, Josh Randall and Evan Williams.
Prior to the Junior Title game, the consolation game featured the Gee & Bee Junior Redskins defeating the Sabattus Disc Golf Junior Steelers. The Redskins were led by the division’s offensive MVP Shawn Jackson, defensive MVP Tanner Cortes and Dominic Colon. The Steelers were led by tough efforts from Isaac Madore, Zack Morin, Lattrell Thomas, Terrell Thomas and Matt Wallingford.
