100 years ago, 1911
RUMFORD — Two bad accidents occurred today near Smith’s crossing about three miles below this place. This morning a passenger train crashed into the team driven by I. Deeren, smashed the wagon, killed the horse and seriously injured Mr. Deeren. This afternoon a freight struck the team of Morris Albert, completely demolished the wagon and hurt the horse, but Mr. Albert escaped uninjured.
50 years ago, 1961
Miss Mary J. Hamilton of Lewiston, who resigned last summer as a teacher at Lewiston High School and who is now teaching at Bliss College, was honored last evening at a surprise dinner tendered her by members of the high school faculty. The supper was served at Steckino’s.
At the head table were, besides the guest of honor, Miss Eleanor McCue, T. Edward Conley, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Shapiro, Miss Beatrice Byrnes, Miss Muriel Dumont and Miss Geneva Kirk.

Hundreds of persons streamed through Bates College’s new Olin Arts Center Sunday afternoon to enjoy a community open house of free music and dance events, an art exhibition and films.
Completed last month, the Olin Arts Center was funded with a grant of over $4 million from the Olin Foundation Inc., of New York City. The foundation is dedicated to the advancement of higher learning in the U.S. through the construction and equipping of entire buildings at independent liberal arts colleges.
