DIXFIELD — The annual Halloween walk along Weld Street on Monday night will offer children and parents a sweet, safe way to trick or treat, organizers said.
The organizing committee raises money all year to buy candy for each participating house on Weld Street.
“That way we know the houses and candy are safe for the kids,” committee member Missy Bradbury said.
“It’s hard with the economy,” she said. “Donations and houses participating are down this year.”
In the past, the committee has been able to give prizes for the best-decorated house and best costumes for certain ages, but it is unable to do so this year.
“It’s just been a hard year on everyone,” Bradbury said.
However, houses are starting to put up decorations on Weld Street, and candy has been purchased for all 30 houses participating, she said.
The Lions Club and Med-Care Ambulance service will be in areas of the street where there are no houses and hand out candy to children walking.
“It’s just a great event where little kids and parents can walk up and down the street without getting in and out of their vehicles,” Bradbury said.
Police Chief Richard A. Pickett said Weld Street from Main Street to Fair Avenue will be closed from 5 p.m. to around 8 p.m. Monday.
“I want the event to be fun and safe for everyone and that is the reason we block the street off to traffic,” Pickett said.
In the past, drivers traveling on Weld Street during the Halloween walk have been issued warnings. This year they’ll get ticketed, he said.
The walk is funded by donations. Anyone wishing to participate or donate money can contact the town office at 562-8151.
