JAY — Ninety-two of the 152 harvestable acres on the town’s tower woodlot have been cut.
The income as of Oct. 24 is $89,923.41, forester Steve Gettle told selectmen recently. The proceeds go to the town’s recreation reserve account.
Gettle is managing the woodlot. A portion of it around the schools was harvested before July 1, when the land was transferred with the schools to the new school district, Regional School Unit 73.
The total income expected from the tower lot is $130,469.25, Gettle said.
Ron Ridley of L & A Ridley, Inc., from Jay is doing the harvesting.
Gettle said the adventure course on the lot took longer because of the way it is set up. Plus there have been a lot of people using the recreation area.
There were also a few trees left that were close to buildings. It was better to leave them than to cause a problem, he said.
“I think you are doing a good job, Ron,” Gettle, who is board chairman, said during the Oct. 24 meeting.
Selectman Tim DeMillo asked when it is expected to be completed.
“I’d like to say we’d be done by the end of the year, Dec. 31, but it depends on weather,” Gettle said.
He doesn’t believe it would be done by that time, he said, but most likely it will be January.
“We knew from the start it would be time consuming,” McCourt said.
Gettle told the board that the area around the bus garage was also cut prior to July 1. The income from that area was $4,786.77 with 114.03 cords harvested over about three weeks.
