MINOT — Selectmen on Monday announced they will soon be advertising for a town treasurer.
Connie Taker, who has served as treasurer for the past 12 years, told selectmen she would like to retire when her term is up at the end of December.
“I’ve been at this long enough, I’d like some time for myself,” Taker said.
Town Administrator Arlan Saunders said he would like to have someone hired — and on the job — by mid-December.
“That way the person hired would have two weeks to work with Connie,” he said.
Taker assured Saunders and the board that she would be available during the transition period.
“I certainly will help with the town report,” Taker said.
The town’s fiscal year ends Jan. 31 and the town report has to be ready prior to the annual town meeting, the first Saturday in March.
Selectmen discussed what they were looking for in a candidate and directed Saunders to post an advertisement by the end of the week.
Taker had worked in the School Union 29 central office, beginning in 1980, before becoming town treasurer in 1999.
Selectmen also reviewed the schedule for developing the 2012 budget, which calls for town departments to have their proposed budgets at the town office by Dec. 7.
Saunders noted that he had met earlier in the day with the Recreation Committee/Conservation Commission and learned that they would not be seeking an appropriation this year.
Saunders also reported that the Highway Department’s winter dress rehearsal, held over the weekend, had gone reasonably well, the only glitch being with the town’s 2008 Sterling plow truck.
“It was hauled to Whited Sunday because it stopped running in the middle of Shaw Hill,” Saunders said.
All is now well, he reported, and the truck is now back in service, a problem with fuel pressure resolved.
Selectmen also signed the RSU 16 budget warrant, in preparation for the Nov. 8 referendum vote on the 2011-12 school year budget.
Selectman Dean Campbell reported that he expects the conceptual drawings for the addition to the central fire station will be completed this week.
