A new electrical sign, from Strauss Brothers, New York, has arrived for the Empire Theatre. Its feature is its attractiveness, either by day or by night. There are about 500 vari-colored lights in its make-up and it will materially add to the exterior appearance of the theatre.

50 years ago, 1961

A 12-year-old Waterville boy, who bicycled away from Opportunity Farm at New Gloucester yesterday afternoon, was picked up by Auburn police about an hour later.

Police said the lad told them he was riding his bike to Waterville to visit his mother.

Police were told of the lad at 5:03 p.m. when the attendant at the Auburn interchange of the Maine Turnpike called to report that a boy riding a bike had just asked directions to Waterville.

25 years ago, 1986

The Lewiston City Council approved Tuesday a malt and vinous liquor license for a new restaurant on Main Street.

City Clerk Gerald P. Berube told the council that Friend’s Restaurant at 707 Main St., is expected to open sometime this weekend. The restaurant is owned by Guy Nadeau and his two sons, Greg and Phil. The Nadeaus operate Friends Deli at 124 Bartlett St., Lewiston.
