Board: Sabattus selectmen
Met: Tuesday night
Ramp repairs coming
Issue: The Martin’s Point boat launch needs repairs.
The scoop: The town received the promise of materials, equipment and labor for installing planks from the Bureau of Parks & Land. It has also received $2,000 from the Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District. Selectmen formally accepted both offers.
Up next: Repairs should be finished this fall.
Casino pitch
Issue: Voters statewide are being asked to approve a casino for Lewiston on Nov. 8.
The scoop: Question 3 campaign manager Stavros Mendros said in a presentation that Sabattus could receive an estimated $70,000 from the casino. He also pointed to job creation and Bangor’s experience.
Up next: Selectmen didn’t take a vote to support or oppose the proposal.
Transfer station
Issue: Residents arrived at the transfer station on Sunday to find it closed.
The scoop: The town is down a snowplow driver and the transfer station wasn’t plowed out. Town Manager Andrew Gilmore is trying to secure equipment so transfer station workers can plow themselves out in the future.
Up next: It’s Recycling Appreciation Day at the transfer station Nov. 19. There will be raffles, free trash bags and doughnuts.
Odds and ends
Issue: For its first-time drug take-back event last weekend, the Sabattus Police Department received one large box to fill with unused and outdated prescription drugs. It filled five. Residents can still bring unwanted prescription drugs into the station anytime. They’ll be stored until the next take-back.
Issue: Selectmen aren’t, so far, making a move to regulate or ban fireworks in town.
Issue: The first-time silent auction for several pieces of used and surplus town equipment raised $12,148. Bids were due by Oct. 17.
Issue: Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. The town is also collecting donated food items for local pantries that day. There are only two contested races on the ballot. Scott Lansley and James Wood are competing for a selectman seat. Five people are vying for two seats on the Sanitary/Water District board of trustees: Jeffrey Baril, Guy Desjardins, Donald Laliberty, Christen Morin and Roland St. Amand.
