100 years ago, 1911

A short time ago an order was introduced before the Auburn city government authorizing the appointment of a special committee to investigate the advisability of the purchase of the cemeteries in that city by the city.

The committee has begun its investigation and it expects to report before long. From the investigation already made, it is learned that there are 19 cemeteries in the city. It is not yet known what the public sentiment in regard to the matter will be, and interesting developments are expected.

50 years ago, 1961

The educational television station of Bates, Bowdoin and Colby Colleges, its transmitter located at Litchfield, needs only licensing from the Federal Communications Commission to begin regular operations.

Approval of the FCC could come this week and if it does, station WCBB (Channel 10) will be on the air next Monday, it was made known Monday by Arthur N. Griffiths, director of the Bates College News Bureau.

25 years ago, 1986

Thursday’s storm dumped up to a foot of snow in the mountains of New Hampshire and caused more than 100 minor traffic accidents in Maine, but warm weather predicted for Friday should melt much of it away.

Police were kept busy all day handling vehicles off the road and fender-benders. However, no serious injuries were reported. Schools were closed in many communities, including Lewiston and Auburn.
