WINTHROP – Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Barbara Walsh of Winthrop will launch her new book, a sea drama and memoir about the devastating 1935 August Gale off Newfoundland, on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Bailey Public Library.
“August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey Into the Storm” tells the story of the killer hurricane that roared across Newfoundland in 1935, took the lives of more than 40 Newfoundland fishermen and devastated the Walsh family. Four of their men were lost at sea: Captain Patrick Walsh and three of his sons.
The book is, in a way, a voyage of discovery, a search by Walsh for memories of the August gale of 1935 and the grandfather who abandoned her dad as a young boy. Walsh will hold a question-and-answer session following her talk.
Walsh has also written a children’s book, “Sammy in the Sky,” which has been illustrated by painter Jamie Wyeth, third-generation member of the famous Wyeth family of artists.
Both “August Gale” and “Sammy in the Sky” will be available for purchase and signing at the at 6:30 p.m. event through Apple Valley Books. For more information, call the library at 377-8673.
