GOP Chairman Charlie Webster and Secretary of State Charles Summers should resign. The landslide defeat of their legislation to suppress the Democratic vote proves that they fooled no one with their distractions, lies and intimidation of student voters. If they had any credibility, they no longer do.
Republicans nationally were repudiated. All three of their national campaigns — voter suppression in Maine, the personhood amendment in Mississippi and the anti-labor bill in Ohio — went down to crushing, landslide defeats.
When elections are about two people, voters can easily be misled by candidates who misrepresent themselves (Paul LePage and Mitt Romney come easily to mind). When ideas are on the ballot and they are core beliefs of your party and they come to such complete rejection, you might want to rethink your ideology.
We can hope, but not expect, that congressional Republicans will rethink their strategy of doing all they can to destroy President Barack Obama, even at the expense of the national economy and honor, by abandoning the questionable ideas of Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Sarah Palin and the irresponsible ideas of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
They should come to the table with practical, workable solutions to the economic problems they caused.
