NEW SHARON — A Wayne man was injured and a modular home hauler faces a traffic charge after half of a new modular home slid off a flatbed trailer and struck a pickup truck Tuesday morning on Route 2.
Scott Tripp, 51, of Windham was traveling east on Route 2 with half the modular home on a flatbed trailer at about 9:30 a.m. when he went around the sharp curve in the area of Gage Corner, Deputy Christopher Chase from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department said.
The weight shifted and the home slid off the trailer, striking a 2008 Toyota Tundra driven by William Goodwin, 62, of Wayne who was traveling west toward Farmington.
Goodwin received facial cuts and lost teeth, Chase said. He was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar Ambulance.
Tripp was driving for Maine Modular Haulers from South Paris. The company faces a traffic charge of unsecured load, Chase said. State Police Trooper Mark Lopez, who works with the commercial vehicle division, helped with the investigation.
An unidentified witness said it looked like strapping broke on the home.
Another truck was behind Tripp hauling the other half of the home but was not involved in the accident. A smaller pickup with wide-load signs traveled ahead of Tripp.
Tripp said he’d been driving since 1978 and had never had anything like this happen before. He was shaken but not injured.
Everything was fine till he got to the curve then all he saw was sawdust and insulation as the home slid on to the road, filling the eastbound lane of traffic, Tripp said.
He was moving the home from South Paris to Holden, outside Bangor.
A crane from Ellsworth was brought to the scene to move the home back on to the trailer, Chase said. The modular apparently received significant damage.
Goodwin’s pickup was probably damaged beyond repair, he said.
New Sharon Fire Department and Farmington Fire and Rescue members helped with traffic control at the scene. The road was down to one-lane of traffic.
